Chapter Twenty-Two

Ihurry back along the mountain pass, clutching the book to my chest, the three magical objects returned to my pockets. I consider slipping the halo over my wrist again but given the effect the angel’s magic had on Tristan, I don’t want to risk that the halo will harm others if they touch it. All I need now is an object of old magic—and this house must be full of them. After all, it’s built on a foundation of old magic.

When I reach the stairs, I sway a little and clutch at the handrail, suddenly lightheaded. My stomach feels empty and my throat is parched. I’ve exerted a lot of energy since I last ate and I’ve been up all night and all morning.

I tell myself to get the fuck on with it.

I’ll eat and sleep soon enough. I finally have the answer to freeing Tristan from Cerberus’s minds and I only have a few days to do it. Five at most.

The Killer swore to destroy Tristan’s mind within the week. It’s the same time frame within which my father threatened to attack Tristan’s pack. The same time frame within which Tristan will die if I don’t help him.

The weight of responsibility squeezes my chest like iron shackles.

Hurrying back down the stairs to the medical wing, I pull up short to find myself in the garden instead. The House has the power to take me where I need to go with only one flight of steps, but it should have taken me to the medical wing. Not here.

The garden is a large space with a waterfall flowing down the entire left wall, while trees and flower bushes circle the courtyard in the middle. Women sit at the wooden tables positioned throughout the courtyard, some of the women talking quietly with each other while others eat silently. I recognize them all from my last stay, although the House continues to prevent me from sensing their supernatural status.

I’m momentarily disoriented by the night sky shining above me, since I’m sure it’s still mid-morning. The trees are lit up along their branches with fairy lights that glow silver across the entire space. Then I spot Iyana at a table toward the middle of the courtyard. She’s sitting with Danika, Maeve, and—my heart lifts a little—the card mage twins, Luna and Lydia.

This room always adjusts to night for Iyana’s safety, so I don’t think any more about the starry sky. For a moment, I consider joining my friends. As much as I want to, sharing a meal with my pack is an indulgence I can’t afford right now.

I’m about to turn away and ascend the stairs again, determined to return to the medical wing, when I spy the silver flowers blooming on the vines that lightly encircle the branches of the farthest tree. I’ve always been drawn to them, my power rising when I was near them.

If they’re old magic, then my search is already over. I’m not sure how I can apply
